A redundant barn converted into a family home

Our brief was to design a purpose build low energy contemporary dwelling for a family in the rear garden of their former home. The heard of the house is the central double-story dining area adjoining with an open plan living and kitchen area. To reduce the energy use of the building we choice a well insulated timber frame construction finished off with an additional layer of insulated render boards. A heat recover system was fitted to support the central heating as well as supplying fresh, filtered air. The solar panels on the south facing roof are producing the hot water for the whole family. The rainwater is collected in a “rainwater harvesting system” to be used for the garden as well as the dishwasher and washing machine.

The client’s brief was to produce a clean, contemporary, inviting workspace while retaining the look, feel and character of the original stone building. We believe that our award winning design achieved that.
Bringing light from the large existing windows maximises the impact of the reception and waiting areas and integrates the steel and wood of the staircase with the stone walls.
Plas Gwyn
A simple extension that transforms the look, feel and functionality of the house. This comfortable but standard house was in need of a new kitchen and the clients wanted a conservatory added.
Bringing the two together and using fold-away windows completely changed the way the house works, bringing more light and air to the house and allowing the house and garden to become one.

This barn conversion and alterations to a dwelling at Troed Rhiw Gelynin, Rhandirmwyn, Llandovery was awarded from the Carmarthenshire’s 2011 Local Authority Building Control Excellence Awards for the “Best Sustainable Project (Residential)”.

Dan-y-Graig Barn Conversion
The clients needed more living accommodation and decided to convert an adjacent existing barn to achieve it.
The clients also wanted a modern look and it was clear that the imposing roof A-frames had to be incorporated in the design.
Glass, timber and slate were chosen as the principal materials as these tied well with the existing stone and timber. Lime finishes, underfloor heating and a ground source heat pump add to the barn’s eco-credentials and help to complete this light, airy, warm and appealing conversion.
